Create a Classroom Motto

For the last couple of years I have used a classroom motto for the year. I found the classroom motto to be inspiring for both the students and the staff. I have noticed that it is repeated quite often in the course of our day. Since I have students for several years (young adult special education) I change my motto each year.

Two years ago I used the motto "You Got This".

Last year I used the motto, "like a boss". That one took a little explaining. I told students to do something "like a boss" was to do it well, do it like you own it! It wasn't long before this phrase become part of our classroom lingo.

The search for this year's motto seems even more important than previous years. We are in the middle of a worldwide pandemic and just found out that we will start school online. We may have to flex between several plans during the course of the 20-21 school year!

I started my search by asking for advice from one of the teacher facebook groups I belong to called, We are Teachers Helpline. That resulted in 28 comments/ideas! Another source is to google "classroom motto ideas". I also used Pinterest and not only gleaned some motto ideas but some classroom decor ideas to go with the motto. Here are a few of my favorites.

"Dream Big, Aim High

"In it to Win it"

"Let's do this!"

"We are in this Together"

"Choose Kind"

"We Can Do Hard Things"

"Be a Ray of Sunshine"

"You were made for this"

"less me, more we"

After much debating (drum roll here), I am going with

Our class motto for 2020-2021 is We Can Do Hard Things!
